Raw, reclaimed, refined

With multiple entry points, plazas and transport links, the system was designed to provide clear, intuitive navigation through a complex urban environment. Ground-plane signage uses granite and bronze to reinforce cohesion with the architectural language whilst First Nations narratives are embedded throughout, strengthening a sense of place.

Local Indigenous consultants Balarinji and artist Debra Beale created artwork, motifs and storytelling elements that are woven into signage. Wayfinding totems are adorned with a design called Ngalga Dyi (Look Here) which features depictions of native fish and shellfish. An inlaid Acknowledgement of Country called Duba (Ground) tells the story of local waterways and significant animals to the Gadigal people, the local custodians of the Sydney CBD area.

For the workplace, a distinctly local wayfinding scheme was developed to express material innovation and subtle craft while aligning with the building’s refined civic character.

Sustainability was central to the approach, with signage fabricated from recycled waste plastic sheets reconfigured to create a terrazzo-like finish. The material elevates a reclaimed resource into a premium expression while reducing environmental impact, reinforcing Macquarie’s commitment to responsible design.

A key focus of the workplace was the creation of memorable internal destinations, taking cues from the character of hospitality venues. Key areas were designed as identifiable moments that encourage gathering, pause and interaction, helping to anchor users within the workplace while contributing to a richer and more human-centred experience.
